Tom Cruise

Drawing on the experiences that touched his life, award-winning actor Tom Cruise has shown a dedication for helping others in need. His areas of contribution range from mentoring and education to detoxification of rescue workers suffering from toxic exposure at Ground Zero.

Tom is the co-founder of the 911 New York Firefighters' & Rescue Workers' Detoxification Program, which uses the Hubbard Detoxification Protocol. Co-founding the first facility and covering costs for many of the patients doing the program, he is engaged in raising money to establish an additional five clinics around New York.

As for his work in education, Tom is an activist and global ambassador for Applied Scholastics International. His work includes helping Applied Scholastics establish their 100-acre international teacher training institute and headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri.

As well, Tom's relentless support of the Hollywood Education & Literacy Project (HELP) has changed the lives of more than 5,000 young people. For his work as a mentor for youth and as a Founding Board Member of HELP, Tom was honored by the National Mentoring Partnership with their Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2003.

“When I was about seven years old, I had been labeled dyslexic. I would go blank, feel anxious, nervous, bored, frustrated, dumb. All through school and well into my career, I felt like I had a secret.

“I was introduced to the writings of L. Ron Hubbard… and everything fell into place. I had a lot of catching up to do, but that was it! I realized I could absolutely learn anything that I wanted to learn.

“I don't want people to go through what I went through. I want kids to be able to solve life's problems.”

Erika Christensen in Parenthood

A new series based on the successful movie Parenthood is slated for release in the first quarter of 2010. Scientologist Erika Christensen will star as Julia in this one hour comedy/drama.

The show will be exec produced by Jason Katims, writer of "Friday Night Lights", and by the power duo of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer of Imagine. Also starring in the show is Lauren Graham of The Gilmore Girls (my wife's favorite show of all time).

Chick Corea at the Scientology Charity Concert in East Grinstead

I can only dream what this concert was like. It was part of the annual benefit concert following (a day or so after) the Anniversary of the International Association of Scientologists. Can you imagine? Chick is a musical giant and that's Mark Isham on the horn--another real great. I saw both of them, jamming together in Hollywood a few months ago at the Celebrity Center Gala. Wish I could have been in England too. Not something you want to miss!

Scientology in UK: Anne Archer Hosts Sussex Charity Concert

EAST GRINSTEAD, Sunday, October 18th: Academy Award nominated actress Anne Archer, presented cheques amounting to £50,000 to several different local charities on behalf of the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation and the Church of Scientology at the annual Gala Charity Concert at Saint Hill, East Grinstead.

Ms. Archer was the Master of Ceremonies, introducing each performer and also presenting the cheques on stage to the representatives of each charity, namely: the Sussex Air Ambulance; the Bluebell Steam Railway; East Grinstead charities the Town Museum, Furnihelp, and the East Grinstead Access Group for the elderly and disabled; Impact; and Crowborough charities the Town Mayor’s Charity Fund and the Community Hospital.

Bob Mainstone, representing the East Grinstead charities, said, “This donation will make a big difference to these charities in accomplishing their respective aims and is warmly appreciated.”

More than 1,500 were in attendance to enjoy the concert and give their support, including Mayors, District Council Chairmen, Town Councillors, and community leaders from all over the South of England. Other guests flew in specially from all over Europe and as far away as the United States and Canada.

The event covered a wide spectrum of music including Chick Corea, jazz legend and 15-time Grammy Award Winner; Mark Isham, Grammy, Emmy and Clio Award Winning composer, who has scored over 100 films; Alexander Markov, internationally celebrated virtuoso solo violinist; David Pomeranz, songwriter and recording artist with 18 Gold and 22 Platinum records; Elena Roggero, the “Italian Queen of Jazz”, and the UK’s top swing jive band – the Jive Aces.

Marianne Rowell, Deputy Director of the L. Ron HubbardFoundation, said, “We, as the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation and theChurch of Scientology, were delighted to give our support to these wonderful local charities tonight. This annual event is the highlight of our charity fundraising events and activities. Our warm thanks are due to all those who contributed.”

Over the years the Saint Hill Gala Charity Concert has supported numerous charities, from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the RSPCA to the National Drug Prevention Alliance and theBluebell Railway Trust. The concert follows the tradition that was started by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1960’s when he resided at Saint Hill Manor and supported many of the local charities.

The Gala Concert concluded a three-day jam-packed weekend of activities at the Church of Scientology with over 7,000 people from around the world, with conferences and seminars for parishioners and community leaders alike, encompassing the Church of Scientology’s social betterment programmes in the areas of human rights, drug education, common sense morals, and the volunteer ministry.

Reply to Jackie

Jackie from Arizona left a comment on my last post. The comment was about a post she thought I had made regarding the use of the drug Abilify on children.

Jackie, I see that your comment was clearly heart-felt and I empathize with your situation. However, I can't find any post on the four blogs that I contribute to that mentions Abilify. I can only guess that you got to my post from a link on another blog.

I would never criticize desperate parents for the actions they take to handle a situation with their kids. I do criticize doctors and psychiatrists who, without seeking less harmful alternatives, prescribe drugs that are not approved for kids and that have dangerous side effect. (See this data on Abilify.)

Parents trust health care professionals to be advising them correctly and honestly. It is not the parents fault when a health care professional is poorly trained and ignorant of alternatives to dangerous treatments, yet pretends to know what he or she is talking about when prescribing potentially lethal drugs.

The parents place their trust in the doctor and all too often in these days of assembly line medicine, the parents are betrayed when the doctor scribbles a quick prescription for the latest and greatest drug the pharmaceutical rep just told him about.

There are alternative treatments and even if the child needs a calming drug in an emergency there are older and safer alternatives, drugs that are out of patent but that have a 30 or 40 year history of safe use with minimal side-effects. Trouble is, such drugs are out of patent and so are not pushed in the face of doctors by pharmaceutical companies hungry for profits.

So, Jackie, I am sad that you gave your child Abilify, but I understand that you were doing what you thought was best for your son based on what you were told by the doctors.

Scientologists don't believe in ...

I get fed up with hearing self-proclaimed experts telling me what I do and don't believe. Case in point, just a week or two ago some twit on "The View" made the authoritative announcement that "Scientologists don't believe in autism."

Did she ask a Scientologist? No. Did she read it in a Scientology book? No. Did she read it in a Scientology publication? No. Did she read it on a Scientology web-site? No.

In fact L. Ron Hubbard (founder of the religion) never mentioned it anywhere in his writings. The Church of Scientology has never mentioned it in any of its publications and no representative of the Church speaking in the media has ever denied its existence. (It's not mentioned in the Bible either, so does that mean Christians don't "believe" in it? Of course not.)

So where do these media "experts" get this garbage from? I would guess rumor and lies because there is no actual valid source for such stupid pronouncements.

In fact on Sept 23rd, John Travolta acknowledged in court that his son Jett was autistic.

So why do the media talking heads continue to expound these lies? It all comes down to two things: controversy and conflict. Because those are thought to be two of the essential ingredients of news stories, the media tries to put them into every story. And apparently they do it even if it involves lying or twisting the facts.

New Church in Music City, USA

The opening day in Nashville, more than 3,000 Scientologists and guests toured the new Church of Scientology and Celebrity Centre, just a mile from "Music Row".

Having traveled 20,000 miles since the opening of the Fort Harrison in mid March, Mr. Miscavige once again officiated the ribbon cutting of yet another new Church, this one in Nashville, Tennessee-Music City, USA.

The following weekend, hundreds gathered in the Nashville Chapel for Sunday Services.

The opening of the new Church of Scientology and Celebrity Centre Nashville, just one mile from "Music Row," drew Scientologists from across the region. Also on hand were scores of local dignitaries, residents and Hollywood celebrities. Among those who addressed the gathering were Grammy-winning composer and musician Mark Isham and actresses Anne Archer and Jenna Elfman.

Then again, speaking to the broader significance of a Church of Scientology in the heart of Music City, Mr. Miscavige dedicated the new Church:

"The new Ideal Org and Celebrity Centre signals great things for tomorrow. And when you couple that with our ability to recover to individuals their inherent creativity, our ability to reawaken dreams and restore the power to achieve those dreams, yes, we can now make good on what L. Ron Hubbard tells us regarding the artist as creating the beauty and glory on which cultures depend.

"And that's both what this new Church represents and why we have come to Nashville. For while Nashville is known as the heart and soul of American music, let her now fulfill her destiny and write a song that will uplift every man."

With that, the ribbon was cut and the new Church in Music City, USA, opened to all to begin writing that new song.

Scientologists I've seen lately in TV and Movies

Without trying I've spotted several Scientologists on TV and in movies in just the last week.

It started with an old episode of Stargate SG-1 (what a superb show) starring Corin Nemec as "Jonas Quinn" then came the movie Flightplan co-starring Erika Christensen (an edge of your seat thriller starring the brilliant Jody Foster), followed by an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, guest starring Elizabeth Moss and another Law and Order: CI guest starring Geoffrey Lewis. Then to top it all off Elizabeth Moss was featured in Entertainment Weekly in her role as "Peggy Olsen" in the award winning series Mad Men.

All that in just the last week and I don't even watch a lot of TV and movies.

Lisa Marie Presley speaks out about Michael Jackson

The ghoulish media coverage of Michael Jackson's death is gradually fading out. The once fresh news they could drool over is becoming stale and they are moving on to fresher and tastier fare.

His many fans were saddened by his death and I'm sure his friends and family were devastated. Many things have been said about Michael, both good and bad, but one of the most poignant and heartfelt that I've seen is a blog post by Lisa Marie Presley.

40th Anniversary of Celebtrity Center International

Reading a wonderful speech of David Miscavige - about Celebrity Center International - it struck me that this Church of Scientology has its 40th anniversary this year!

But what is a Celebrity Center, or "CC"?

The CC International website provides the answer:

Scientology exists to provide help — help for all people — at every strata of life, of every disability or ability and across all ethnic and religious boundaries.

Borne out of this desire to help are the many social betterment activities Scientology supports. From our education programs, providing real answers to declining literacy levels, to our solutions for criminal reform and drug-rehabilitation — everything we do in Scientology is in the name of help.

Thus, while we continue our work to bring real solutions to those areas of society most in need, we also realize that we must not forget those individuals upon whom society depends the most.

Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard once said, “The world is carried on the backs of a desperate few.” Unfortunately, it is these desperate few who are often the most neglected.

It is for this reason that L. Scientology member receives international award in Italy

Scientologist recognized for outstanding contribution to the culture with the Silver Chimera Award for 2009

Scientology Public Affairs Director for the Church of Scientology of Catania, Italy, Ms. Itria Leone, was awarded the 2009 Silver Chimera Award for the impact she has made on the community through her work as coordinator of the Church’s social reform programs.

The 8th annual International Silver Chimera Awards ceremony was organized by dell’Arte Etrusca to raise awareness of social issues and recognize those who have distinguished themselves through contribution that improves the quality of life. With the theme, “Peace in the World,” the ceremony was held this year at the Museo Castello Ursino in Catania, in Sicily.

Ms. Leone, a native of Sicily, has been coordinating the social reform activities of the Church of Scientology of Catania since 2005. At a grassroots level, she has been working to educate children and teenagers on the effects of drugs, to help them make educated choices and avoid the tragedy of addiction. She also coordinates a chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, through which young people learn their rights and help educate their friends and community on the basic rights to which every individual is entitled.

In accepting her award, Ms. Leone acknowledged L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion, for inspiring her to dedicate her life to helping others.

Other recipients of this year’s Silver Chimera Award were: in literature, Dr Sandro Distefano; in medicine, Dr. Ennio Roman; in civil service Dr. Domenico Pinzello, chief representative of the Minister of Interior for the province of Catania, for his many years of effectively combating organized crime, professor Giuseppe Adernò, who has distinguished himself an entrepreneur and cultural leader and Concetta Bufardeci, who has carried on a centuries-long family tradition of representing the country of Spain to Sicily.

Just saw Valkyrie

I just saw Valkyrie. It's out on DVD.

What a great movie. Not only does it star Tom Cruise, but has a host of brilliant British actors including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and more. You can see a full list of everyone here: Valkyrie (IMDB).

I love historical dramas, especially when they are based on actual events. One of the best things about Valkyrie is that it shows us there was a German Resistance against Hitler, something that I had never heard of before this movie was made.

And it shows just how close they came to success. If they had succeeded the war would have ended almost a year earlier and without all the bloodshed and destruction of the last 9 months. I have tremendous admiration for the brave men and women who gave their lives trying to bring down an evil tyrant.

A Book that is a Celebrity

I know I'm stretching the definition of Celebrity a little, but hey, if Shakespeare could stretch meanings, then so can I.

The book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health has been a bestseller since it's publication on May 9th, 1950. I think a book that has sold well over 20 million copies, continues to sell a new copy every 4.8 seconds and has been translated into over 50 languages definitely qualifies as a celebrity.
